Grenache Mataro Shiraz “Avatar” Teusner is made from hand-picked old vine fruit. All the parcels were fermented separately. Mataro and Grenache were allowed to get a bit warmer during the fermentation, to reduce the risk of confected notes. This also helped to preserve the savoury characteristics of the Grenache. Open fermentation took place over seven days below 25°C with manual pump-overs twice daily. Grenache Mataro Shiraz “Avatar” Teusner was pressed through a slotted screen beg press to oak, where it spent 18 months barrel ageing in seasoned French and American oak hogsheads.
Sourced from the perimeter of the Barossa. The key here is the age of the Grenache vines, which are between 65 to 130 years old and are mostly in bush vine format. The fruit is sourced from several subregions, Ebeneezer has the oldest vines – the exact age of the vines is not 100% certain, suffice to say that three generations have seen them grow!
Teusner was established by Kym Teusner and Michael Page in 2001, its philosophy is to produce only exceptional, affordable wines by being very selective about the fruit, which is sourced from old, well maintained vineyards in Barossa. Teusner reliably produce balanced, complex fruit which are guided, with minimal input, into stunning wines. Kym decided to make the Righteous Shiraz because he wanted to showcase his own expression of what he considers the ultimate Barossa Valley Shiraz style…intense, powerful and long-lived.
